What does Jaw Physio involve?
Jaw symptoms / Temporomandibular Disorders are incredibly common, affecting 1/3 of the population at some point across our lives. Because the jaw plays a vital role in our ability to socialise and look after our basic needs, it can be a source of much distress, although it doesn't need to be!
The jaw can become symptomatic for a whole host of reasons, including but not limited to injury, sleep disorders, overuse - clenching or grinding, parafunctional habits such as nail biting, dental or orthodontic work, postural changes, and stress. For this reason, managing jaw symptoms can be complex and requires a thorough assessment of the patient beyond movement and posture.
We will ask a series of questions to assess psychosocial factors, including your sleep, stress and stress management tools, oral habits - the types of food you are chewing- and perform an assessment of jaw, and neck movement. With this information, we can formulate a treatment plan to best manage YOU and your symptoms. This may involve hands-on physiotherapy treatment, a pain management plan, or onward referral where required.
